SYNOPSIS

Urbanization is a global phenomenon that we cannot avoid. Apart from causing many issues, urbanization also offers solutions. Therefore, the role of cities in sustainable development is getting larger along with the increasing percentage of the world's urban population. It is undeniable, if you look at various official reports from world institutions, the increase in urbanization is highly correlated with the growth of a country's per capita income.

Unfortunately, the link between increasing urbanization and per capita income in Indonesia is still lacking in comparison to other Asian countries such as China, Vietnam and Thailand. This means that urbanization in Indonesia is less prosperous than in neighboring countries. The current system makes those who are able to access strategic urban space better can benefit from the existence of the city more than others. Those who are less privileged tend to be marginalized or forced to live in crowded, slum, often illegal and disaster-prone urban spaces.

Then, what can we do? The global commitment of the world community, including Indonesia, in the form of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and New Urban Agenda (NUA) offers a reference for development in general and urban development in particular. In essence, cities must be for all parties. Therefore, cities must be planned, designed, built and managed by all and take advantage of the resources of all. In this way, cities and urbanization also contribute to the realization of the SDGs.

This book explains clearly and in detail what kind of city can prosper all parties as well as contribute to the realization of sustainable development. A city is very important but there should not be ”urban biasCities are not for ourselves, let alone for the few who have access to urban space. Cities must also be able to play a role in the welfare of rural communities, protection of forests, rivers and seas and other things that affect the sustainability of life on earth.
